RADA’s 4TH Annual anniversary:
Ras Alula Development Association (RADA) held its annual fund raiser event on June 27, 2009 in the city of Seattle; Washington. It was well planned and executed by RADA Seattle branch members there were close to seven hundred people in attendance which in turn generated a hefty amount of money.
It was a memorable event specially the boat ride we experienced cruising the Pacific Ocean for four hours with hearty food, refreshing drink and good music. On behalf of RADA members I like to extend my deep gratitude to RADA Seattle branch members for their extra ordinary and relentless effort to make the fund raiser event a success and members of Tigray community in Seattle for their immense support.
Currently RADA is building a youth center in Abi-Addi, Tembien (Ras Alula Aba Nega Youth Center) which embodies:
- Public library with a capacity of accommodating up to 500 readers at a time
- Internet café
- Computer lab
- Indoor and out door games
- Cinema hall
Estimated budget for the project is 5,000,000.00 Birr and it is projected to be completed in three years time. RADA has more than 50% of the budget and has a plan to raise the remainder in the coming two years.

An important message to all members and supporters of RADA

I would like to appreciate first to the RADA founders who gathered us to make this Association and bring us childhood memories and friendship after many years in the USA. We are having joy, happiness and most of all to build the public library and learning center for our people in Tembien. The elected board members with the branch leaders are also who played a great role to bring members and raise funds to what we have accomplished by now, but this is not enough. Why? Because other natives of that place “Tembien” have no concern to join us or think they are part of the community. As I understand, most of them are enjoying the annual events in every city to tour or visit friends and family, but they do not want to be members of the Association. I am calling them again this year to be on our side. This is the time to clean-up their mistrust of our goal. As they have seen our strength, our sight plan, our financially progress and cooperation with love, there is no need to wait to slow down to finish the plan. Instead of asking what have been done, you have to ask yourself that what I have done, what can I do to make it best. If you can’t join or act with your people, you can’t be proud of simple opposition or complain. We the active members and you are common to the people who waiting to taste the fruit of their children.
And you know that while doing this effort, it is to be named built by RADA members who live abroard. Though, we are not doing this for fame. This may help a little that we did our part to give a start to the future generations. The past generations had no choice other than struggling for their daily life. They were powerless not hopeless. They were asking and waiting but did not see any change for better life of their children until they pass away recently. Their voice of unity to their needs was gone with the wind. We the children as heritage had to face the same life experience and with no back bone to support. After all, people were displaced out from their homes, no body returned since then to live in their houses. A city without people is a tree without branches, but we by chance have better time to look back to the past memories and start to do something without waiting for others to come. Even we are partly lost, it is hard to believe to return home as our wish and dream to live there as a home. Who did not suffer to be away from home as a young age to go for high school, winter bad roads two days journey every year to Mekelle, dark winter and nights to study. It is said “nothing like home”, but what is life without all this and that we need to live. The time I will be happy is when we finish this project. And also I heard the light is on 24/hrs. I can’t wait to see the roads to be built which are the main questions of generations. These are important things for mans life and for investments and jobs that invites people to go back to their home. After all, our kids who didn’t get the chance to visit have little to say about where their families came from. Those who visited do not want to go back there. It is not without reasons. They do not want to live like we have been living. So, have they to be lost forever? Let us not encourage that. What we do is, let them know their origin starting from RADA and let them visit. Those who see these events are always with interest to be who they are. They do not have to live there, but they may know their background to follow us and may help when they became somebody for the future to live with pride. This is what I can say to all of you to contribute that you can.
What we are doing now is encouraging by paying $20/mo or $240/yr and creating fund raising events by a few numbers of members. That is how we collected more than $250,000.00 to about $300,000.00 by this year. Had every body from Tembien had helped /joined/ and pay that much; the above figure could have been more than double by now for the proposed project income. Only coming to party and dance can’t help. Be a member, pay monthly dues and pledge that you can.

Ras Alula Development Association is a non-Profit, tax exempt, non-political and non-exclusive development organization with the sole objective of helping the people of Tembien region in their fight against chronic poverty, epidemics of HIV/AIDS and recurring drought and famine.
Tembien is located in Tigray Ethiopia. This region of the country is one of most needy, neglected and least developed. Thus RADA is created as part of a common endeavor to alleviate the socio economic problems of these people and to assist through sustainable developmental and educational programs.
The Association was established in Denver, Colorado, USA on July 17, 2005 by the people of Tembien and friends in Diaspora.
